Canterbury Women Make it Two from Two

23 Aug 2009

CaseyThe Canterbury Women’s representative side continued on its winning way last weekend with a 24-0 win against Wellington in Blenheim.

This was Canterbury’s second match of the representative season. Their first match the week before had resulted in a convincing 48-7 win against Otago.

After that quality performance, it was hoped that Canterbury would not only continue on its winning way but play with the same sort of accuracy.

Fielding a reasonably young side in the first half, Canterbury was not as accurate as its coaching staff would have liked in the first 40 minutes against Wellington.

“Wellington was a bigger side than Otago and they were able to push-off more tackles and really test our defence,” manager Kay Goodhue says.

“Wellington also has quite a large squad and so they were able to use their rolling subs very effectively.”

Canterbury though brought on some of its more experienced hands in the second half and the red and blacks cruised through to end up convincing winners.

In all, Canterbury scored three tries (to Lucy Ryan, Haley Hurring and Amiria Rule) and showed once again that it is one of the strongest provinces in the country.

Particularly impressive for Canterbury at the moment is loose forward Casey Robertson. “She is certainly playing the best rugby of career and all the training that she has done is certainly paying off,” Kay says. “She has not said whether she will be available for the Black Ferns this season, but if she does make herself available then I think she will be right in the frame.”

Canterbury now plays Hawke’s Bay on AMI Stadium this weekend, before travelling to Palmerston North to play Manawatu. They are then away to Otago before the big match of the round-robin against Auckland in Christchurch. The semi-finals will be held on 26 September before the national final on 3 October.

Canterbury lost the national provincial final to Auckland last season and so a win against its great rivals at any stage of the season is what all red and black rugby fans will be hoping for this season.
