Canterbury Women In Top Spot

4 Sep 2009

Kendra CocksedgeThe Canterbury Women’s Team claimed top position in the NZRU Women's Competition last weekend, after a strong win over Manawatu 55-0.

The girls started well, with a try to gutsy halfback Kendra Cocksedge (pictured right), in the first minute of the match. Co-coach Paul Kelly said his side looked to control the game, and use the conditions, and with the wind behind them, they looked to kick and keep the ball down Manawatu’s end.

Paul said their front row dominated, and with the strength of their lineout, the game flowed from their set pieces. With tries to Stephanie TeOhaere-Fox, Melissa Ruscoe, Barbara Chittock, and a second try to Cocksedge, the girls had a substantial 36-0 lead at the break.

Paul said after their dominance in the first half, they wanted to judge their overall performance on the second half, to see if they could keep it going for the full 80 minutes. They did exactly that, clocking on another three tries to Halie Hurring, Olivia Bird, and a second for Captain Barabara Chittock.

The girls play Otago this weekend in the local derby, at North Ground in Dunedin. Although they are feeling quietly confident after beating them 49-7 in their pre-season match, their big emphasis will be on their performance tomorrow, and making a positive step forward.  Paul says Otago have nothing to lose, so they’re expecting them to throw everything at them. But he believes if Canterbury can dominate early and get the set pieces right, they’ll be where they want to be.
