Canterbury Women - Remain Competition Leaders
As they expected, Otago didn’t hold anything back, and played well constructed rugby, which gave the girls the “shake-up” they need going into their match against Auckland this weekend. Coach Paul Kelly said it wasn’t the best game they’ve played and the girls started off “a bit loose”, and Otago had them on the back foot. But they came back well in the second half, and they had some great individual performances, and achieved their third 4 try bonus point win they were looking for. Paul says although their last three matches have been against competitive opposition, they were not in same caliber as Auckland, so this weekend will be the big test for them. Canterbury only lost narrowly by one point in last year’s NZRU competition final, but with the season they’re having so far, they are looking good for the challenge tomorrow. With a knee injury to Amiria Rule, and Elisha May out this weekend, they have had a slight re-shuffle to the team, but Paul says it as a chance for some of the other players to step up. He says their key thing is to just “go out there and play and see what comes off”. The change of venue to Rugby Park, which was decided early in the week, was announced to the girls at training on Tuesday night, which Paul says they were thrilled to hear. He hopes to see a good crowd down there to support them tomorrow, in this top of the table clash. Kick-off is at 1pm.
