Canterbury Women All Set for Final Clash

1 Oct 2009

Elish MayThe Canterbury Women’s rugby team take on their Auckland rivals in the final of the NZRU Women’s competition at Rugby Park, Christchurch, on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.

It will be the first time that the final has been held in Christchurch.

Canterbury will be determined to go one better than last season, when they lost the final to Auckland at Eden Park 13-12.

The Red and Blacks won their semi-final over Hawke’s Bay 55-3 at Rugby Park last Saturday to maintain their unbeaten run this season. It was a fine performance by Canterbury, with Kendra Cocksedge the leading scorer with a try, a penalty and three conversions.

In the other semi-final, Auckland beat Wellington 19-3.

Canterbury coach Paul Kelly said: “The girls are in a good frame of mind heading into this match. We’re just refining what we’ve been doing this season – you don’t want to tinker too much in the final week.

“We’re looking forward to playing some good rugby in front of our home crowd. It should be a great occasion.”

Captain and flanker Melissa Ruscoe is unlikely to be available for the match. The Black Fern suffered a concussion injury while playing for Canterbury against Wellington in the final round-robin match of the season and missed last weekend’s semi-final.

A final decision on Ruscoe will be made after training tonight.

The team for Saturday’s final will be released tomorrow morning.

Canterbury beat Auckland 20-15 in a round-robin match this season – the first time the Red and Blacks had beaten their northern rivals.

Canterbury’s results so far this season:

Beat Hawkes Bay 31-5, beat Manawatu 55-5, beat Otago 24-5, beat Auckland 20-15, beat Wellington 17-6, beat Hawke’s Bay in semi-final 55-3.
