Canterbury B - Double-take at AMI Stadium this Saturday

Tim PriestIf you were planning on coming along to see our Canterbury Boys defend the Ranfurly Shield against Otago at AMI Stadium this weekend, come a little bit earlier and catch the double! Our Canterbury B team is playing the Curtain Raiser against Otago B, kicking off at 2pm.

The The Canterbury B side has had a reasonable start to their season, having won one and lost one.

After winning the NZRU B Competition in 2008, the competition was scrapped, as a result of some “belt tightening” by the NZRU. Their season programme was then constructed around a double round-robin with local South Island foes, Otago and Southland B sides, and Nelson Bays and Wellington.

They lost to Southland B 38-22 last Saturday, but Coach Viv de Beus says the Southland side had the advantage of already having played a number of fixtures together this season. He says they were a much more organized side, and led 14-0, 8 minutes into the match. Although Canterbury came back, Southland scored another 15 points in the last 5 minutes, out-stretching their 1 point lead. Viv says he’s happy with how his side played, “they just made a few too many mistakes”.

With only 6 members of their 2008 squad remaining, the team has a number of new faces, and with injuries to first 5/8 Chris Lumsden and Riki Tukaki, they have now had to recruit players from the Metro and Country Seniors sides. They also have the help of the extra players, not required in Canterbury A weekly 22 line-up, coming into the squad, which helps to boost the pack.

Viv says he is happy with where his guys are at the moment, and they have trained well this week, and are looking forward to playing Otago at AMI Stadium this weekend.
