The newly formed Canterbury Development Team have been named for the inaugural Development Series, with fixtures against Tasman and Wellington Development Teams, as well as an additional fixture for Canterbury against Hawke’s Bay.

The series is a new initiative, sparked off the back of the South Island Invitational Tournament in order to give further game time and development for players from around the region, on the cusp of Mitre 10 Cup selection. Teaming up with our Crusaders neighbours Tasman, as well as the teams from the Hurricanes, in Wellington and Hawke’s Bay, with the hope the competition may grow to extend the likes of Manawatu as well, in coming seasons.

Head Coach Dwayne Prendergast says he’s really pleased with the introduction of this new Development Series Concept. “We’re really excited about the opportunity this brings for development in the region and giving these players a chance to represent the province. This is something we haven’t had for a number of years, so it’s great to again have this as part of the representative programme.”

Dwayne says the coaching group were assisted in their selections by a panel from around the region, and they have selected a good mix of players from our Canterbury Metro, Canterbury Country and Canterbury Maori teams, following their performances in the recent South Island Invitational Tournament.

The team travel to Nelson today, to take on Tasman Development at Sports Park Motueka tomorrow, at 1pm, and have a short turn around, flying to Napier on Thursday morning to play Hawke’s Bay at 3pm at Tremain Field.  They then travel down to Wellington to play their Development side at Petone Recreation Ground on Saturday (1pm kick-off), before returning home on Sunday.

Sam Godwin, former Canterbury Colts representative has been named to captain the side for the their three fixtures.
