Having had reconstructive knee surgery over a year ago, Christchurch Boys' High Year 10 student Mitch McCann decided the best way to stay in touch with the game he loved was to become a refereeHe took the CRFU ‘You Make the Call’ course in April 08 and took to the role of refereeing like the proverbial duck. Last season he officiated most Saturdays at junior games around the City. Now his knee has recovered he plans to fill his Saturdays playing first and then refereeing. His mature philosophy on officiating will certainly stand him in good stead as his refereeing career unfolds: “The flow of the game is important and I don’t want to blow my whistle every five minutes, so I try to keep things moving and make it an enjoyable experience for the players,” he says. And the best moments? “That’s easy,” says Mitch, “It’s really good when parents and coaches tell you that you’ve done a good job.”  Nowadays refereeing is a viable career option and while, like most fourteen year-olds, he’s not sure what he wants to do going forward, we suspect that if he can’t be an All Black, professional refereeing might be an attractive alternative for this likeable and obviously capable young man.
