Dodsy Departs for Japan

7 May 2009

Former Christchurch Boys’ High Rugby Co-ordinator Steve Dods leaves New Zealand in mid-May to take up a coaching position with the Japanese Division 2 club Canon, based in Yokohama. Having spent eight years in Ireland – “Where I learned to laugh at myself,” - Dods took up a coach co-ordinator position with Boys’ High in 2001, which morphed into an administration role a couple of years later; with 400 to 500 players and 18 – 22 teams that soon became a full-time job. Having enjoyed some of the glory years with Boys’ High, Steve says that it wasn’t the elite players who gave him the most satisfaction, but helping those kids in the Bs, Cs and Ds who will hopefully go on to become the foundation of the club game: “In 2003 we had a 4th XV that had no coach or manager. They organised all their own trainings and managed their games throughout the season, and we never had one complaint. To be honest, that meant more to me than all the trophies,” he says. Clearly the lure of the yen is attractive, but Dods says that the prime drivers for the move are to take his young family on an adventure – a decision which is, at least in part, fuelled by a brush with cancer three years ago - and to fulfill a goal of coaching professionally again. Dodsy leaves big boots to fill and we wish him and his family well on their travels.
