Rangiora HS Rugby on a Roll

12 May 2009

One of the first rugby administrators to be appointed when the pilot scheme was launched in 2004, Rangiora High School’s Jo Best has been close to the explosion in rugby at the school over the past few years. A trained chef and a talented sportswoman in her own right, Jo has represented Canterbury in six sports (rugby, touch, soccer, basketball, netball and athletics). She went on to compete for New Zealand in the heptathlon and spent some time on the European athletics circuit before a series of stress fractures put an end to her career. In addition to her administrative role, Jo has coached the Rangiora Girls team to three Midweek League titles and helped to drive the development of junior rugby in the school. “It’s really important that we get the juniors involved in secondary school rugby as early as possible, otherwise we can lose them.” she says. The work with the juniors is beginning to pay dividends at 1st XV level and, if they can capitalise on the good start they have made this season, Rangiora HS will be very well placed to challenge for a 2010 Press Cup place in September. There was a time when just getting to the Press Cup was the goal, but now it’s all about long-term planning and building a platform that will sustain them in the competition going forward.
