Area Schools Success Story

At the beginning of the season Kim saw that by pooling players from three country schools – notably Oxford Area School, Hurunui College and Amuri Area School - enough players could be recruited to form a midweek senior boys team.
The principals from each of the schools gave their support and  the project received a further boost with funding granted by Mainland for the minibuses required to transport players to their Wednesday matches.
Throughout the season the team has performed extremely well, losing only once early on and looking to finish in the top three. At the recent South Island Triangular Tournament the Area Schools side more than held its own with a 12-all draw with the Northern team and a narrow last-minute loss to the Southern team, who ran out eventual winners.
Belfast Rugby Development Officer Mike Rowe, who has taken on the role of coaching the forwards (while Kim works with the backs), has been a key factor in the development of the team.
The Area Schools team plays all of its games at Kaiapoi Rugby Club, which, under the watchful eye of Rick Moore, is always beautifully presented.
Just goes to show what can be achieved when good people with a clear vision and strong leadership work hard to make things happen.
