Best of the Rest edges out Papanui

Playing under the banner of "The Best of the Rest," an invitation team comprised of girls from schools other than Papanui - beat this year's Champion team by 17 - 7 in a close encounter at Papanui High School. Handling errors, turnovers and sound defence from both sides sabotaged a number of scoring opportunities in a scoreless first half. But some of the "Best of the Rest" combinations began to click in the second period and the visitors were rewarded with three good tries. Having not been tested for most of the season, observers were interested to see how the Papanui girls would manage the pressure of being on the back foot. To their credit, they remained focused and disciplined throughout and were justly rewarded with a converted try of their own at the end of the game. Both sides will have benefitted from a competitive game played in a good spirit.
