Pre-season proving competitive for BedesThe St. Bede’s College 1st XV has a lot to live up to in 2010. Last years side was arguably the best in the College’s 99 year history winning through to the National Top Four finals in Rotorua, where they finished runners-up. The challenge for the 2010 team is to avoid being overawed by what has been achieved in the last few years - to make their own way in a fresh season. In the preseason to date St. Bede’s hasn’t had it all its own way. The Christchurch Secondary School 10s was a very competitive tournament. While St. Bede’s was the eventual winner, the final was a hard fought tussle, with Christ’s College proving a tough and uncompromising opponent. The CBHS Easter Rugby Festival provided a series of games which served as trials for selection of the 2010 1st XV squad. Games against St. Andrew’s College and Waimea College (Nelson) provided reminders of what is in store for the team this year. The final game on Easter Sunday was a bruising encounter with St. Peter’s College (Auckland) with neither side giving an inch. St. Bede’s eventually ran out the winners 18 -13, but most importantly the team was given a reality check on just how tough top level 1st XV rugby is, and what is required to be successful at this level. An initial squad of 24 was named following the Festival tournament. Eight of last year’s squad have been reselected, five forwards – Michael Gardner, Carl Jeffs, Hame Toma, Ila Lamositele and Jack Higgins along with three backs – Zac Southen, Shayne Anderson and Zac Lilley. The experience of these players is complimented by prop Siate Tokolahi and half back Tyrone Davies. The squad is : Backs - Tyrone Davies, Jake Ashby, Zac Southen, Taylor Direen, Matt Comyns, Zac Lilley, Shayne Anderson, Michael Jones, Hagen Schulte, Moses Faletolu, Shunsuke Nunomaki. Forwards - Michael Gardner, A.J. Setafano, Siate Tokolahi, Leighton Hood, Jack Higgins, Gerard Burke, Brad Lake, Sam Lentjes, Brad Tucker, Ilalio Lamositele, Misimoa Lamositele, Hame Toma, Carl Jeffs (captain) Brett Anderson.
