Burnside 1st XV 2010Burnside HS played in the pre-season 10-a-side tournament, improving with every game and putting together some solid performances. Our first game was against St Thomas’ College and was a courageous effort to manage a 12-12 draw considering the fact that we had had few trainings. The likes of Owen Murphy, Karl Douglas and Elijah Liaina-Tauamiti have already showed promise for the season with solid games in the 10s tournament. Elijah Liaina-Tauamiti is a big addition to the team - it is his first year coming back to rugby after playing league, where he had an opportunity in Cronulla for a trial for the Cronulla Sharks Development team. The team had a game at AMI Stadium against St Andrew’s College where we unfortunately lost. It proved that we have a few things to work on, but if we tidy up the ruck area and provide clean ball for our backs, we should be rolling in tries. We had a very tough encounter with Shirley Boys’ HS, going down narrowly but we displayed physical presence right across the field and showed that our defence should be more effective than in previous years. We have a large, mobile forward pack, with the likes of Adam Drollett, Ryan Lee, Ben Scott and Karl Douglas up front, and Owen Murphy, Greg Mornin, Matt O’Rourke and Keyton Evans, and at the back with Elijah. Mitchell Cooke on the flank should really come into his own this year and with consistent game time should really be useful at ruck and maul time. Hooker, Ben Scott, played all games in the 10s tournament but has been struck with injury, but should be fit for Round 1 of the Press Cup. Greg Mornin is his replacement hooker. This is Greg’s first season in this position, but has been working hard and should be very effective. Former league player Matt Hartley has changed codes and is looking to play in the loose forwards and to bring his dynamic league-style game play into the team.
