CBHS pre-season report 2010

24 Apr 2010

As part of the pre-season build up, 50 boys were selected for a training group which trained twice a week in preparation for CRFU 10s Tournament, warm-up matches against St Augustine’s of Australia, three internal school trials and the CBHS Festival. This preparation gave the potential 1st XV players of 2010 a great opportunity to push their claims for this year’s side.

The 10s competition was a great opportunity to get a look at all the boys and see who had been working hard in the preseason. Boys’ High started with a tough game against Christ’s College and went down 14 to 15. Good wins over Rangiora HS and Shirley Boys’ meant that we met St Bede’s in the semi final. St Bede’s were too strong on the day, winning 24-5. but the 10s had been an excellent way to get the boys started in 2010. Five more games were played before the Festival sides were picked, meaning that everyone had had good opportunity to put themselves forward with two large squads selected.

The shadow 1st XV had a solid tournament with good wins against St Andrew’s, Waimea College and Brisbane Boys’ College. Our only loss in the tournament came against a big St Peter’s team from Auckland, but the boy’s showed enough in this game that an improved season could be ahead.

The 1st XV squad was then picked on the Sunday of Tournament and the 2010 squad is as follows:

Martin Swart, Joe Taylor, Eddy Van Der Pol, Matias Nordenflyct, Ryan Elliston, Raymond MacFarlane, Jake Cresswell, Sonetane Takalau, Jared Percival, Raymond Tuiletufuga, Daniel Johnston, Pita Ah Sue, Simon Caird, Logan Keys, Reed Princep, Hamish Munro, Alex Grogan, Jack Powell, Daniel Leinert Brown, Will Davis, Will Fechney, Seb Siataga, Harry Jones.

Pita Ah Sue has been selected as the captain and is back from last season as well as Martin Swart, Eddy Van Der Pol, Ryan Elliston, Raymond Tuiletufuga, Hamish Munro, Will Davis, Will Fechney and Harry Jones.

The side have played Gisborne Boys’ High School in a pre-season match and had a scrappy 15 all draw. We travel to Nelson College for the first for a very tough game, one that could prove to be very important come the end of the season.
