StAC vs Roncalli Match ReportRichie Mo’unga kicked five kicks from five, sealing the St Andrew’s College 1st XV 35-9 victory over new team to the competition, Roncalli College from Timaru, at Timaru in the opening round of the Press Cup. Roncalli went ahead in the first 10 minutes from a well struck penalty goal. St Andrew’s responded by attacking the midfield of Roncalli and executed a well planned try to see captain James Fairbairn score to the left of the posts. Roncalli exerted sustained pressure and were rewarded with another penalty out in front. The StAC forwards started to pick up the pace and rumbled their way to the try line with lock Chris Tomlinson being awarded the try. From the kick off the StAC pack goes forward and takes control of the game. The StAC backs run the ball with pace and are on attack. They keep the ball alive and swing it wide for James Fairbairn to cross the line again. Half Time 21 – 6. St Andrew’s get the perfect start after half time as they get their maul rolling and drive up the field, however strong defence from Roncalli wins them a penalty. Roncalli continues to attack through their forwards but the attack fails due to fierce counter rucking, half back Martin Solofua runs from his own 22 to score under the posts, securing the bonus point. Debutant Mo’unga converts his fourth try. Roncalli forwards run the ball at the St Andrew’s pack, but get pushed back in the middle of the field. A clearing kick is charged down and Mo’unga is on the spot to run 30 metres to score his first try in The Press Cup which he duly converts putting the final nail in the coffin. Next week St Andrew’s host Burnside at their annual Club Day with a 2.45pm kick off, while Roncalli plays Ashburton College.
