St Bede's comfortably beat Waimea

3 May 2010

St. Bede’s College successfully defended the Trustbank Cup for a record-equalling 26th time with their comprehensive 61-0 victory over Waimea College in Round 2 of the Press Cup. The writing was on the wall from early in the game as the St. Bede’s scrum dominated their opponents to such an extent that fleet footed No. 8 Ila Lamositele and sharp-running halfback Tyrone Davies were a constant threat to the Waimea defence. In the St. Bede’s forwards, Lamositele looked very capable, scoring three tries, Michael Gardner and openside flanker Carl Jeffs one apiece, while in the backs, second-five Taylor Direen looked the part as he scored two tries, winger Shayne Anderson beat five or six defenders to score beside the posts and replacement centre Moses Faletolu scored late in the game. First-five Zac Southen directed play well and kicked superbly, converting the first eight tries and only just missing his last attempt. The St. Bede’s front-row of Tokolahi, Gardner and Higgins were very solid at scrum time with hooker Gardner and Tokolahi also featuring prominently with ball in hand.

Starved of quality ball, Waimea struggled to get into the game, but their looseforward trio of McKenzie, Soper and Scott worked hard to stem the flow. Hafback Mitchell Stevenson cleared the ball well under constant pressure, centre Trael Joass tackled manfully and fullback Paddy Smith was efficient at the back
