CBHS run away with game over Lincoln
4 May 2010
Following the convincing win over Burnside last week, there was the potential for LHS to take the game to CBHS and not just be another statistic. Unfortunately for LHS things took a turn for the worse before the game started, losing Daniel Hurring and Flynn Watts to injury warming up. Well this was not the end of the world it did appear to have an impact on some team member's confidence. With a few more games under their belt, in future this type of disruption will not have the same impact.
LHS attacked from the kick off and was able to pin CBHS in their own half for 5 minutes, before CBHS took control of the ball and scored the next 31 points. At this stage LHS was able to get some continuity of possession and for the next 10 minutes attacked repeatedly, to no avail. CBHS then took possession of the ball again and scored another 12 points before half-time. Half time score: CBHS 43 (7T 4C) LHS 0
The 2nd half saw a continuation of CBHS traffic that Lincoln struggled to match in numbers both on defense and on the few occasions that LHS was able to string an attack together. Adding further to LHS 'bad day at the office' was a knee injury to Tamas Taurua. With Tamas off the field CBHS took full advantage and went on to score 62 points in the 2nd Half. (10T 6C) Tamas is okay and should be back playing this season.
The first positive to take out of the game was the performance of the forward pack in the set pieces, both lineout and scrum. While the LHS scrum did not have the dominance that they had the previous week over a weaker Burnside pack, they in my opinion were the equal of the CBHS scrum repeatedly putting the CBHS scrum under pressure in the 1st half.
CBHS dominance came down to using the ball, to set up repeated overlaps, drawing the defenders in closer before sending the ball wide to, in some cases, numbers that gave the impression that CBHS had more then 15 on the field. While it was a pleasure to watch the CBHS team's efficient use of the ball to draw the LHS man in, it was soul destroying for the boys on the field but to their credit, regardless of the score, they didn't run up the white flag. They were just out played by an experienced unit that targeted their inexperience.
As stated at the start of this report confidence was the biggest hurdle for the boys to overcome against CBHS and as the game wore on it got harder, causing panic when calm heads and a 'back to basics' attitude was needed. To the team's credit they kept up the tackle count till the final whistle. This game was a brutal induction for most at this level, but one I'm confident will not be repeated this season. This is a young team and one that will grow in confidence and statue as the season progresses.
