Timaru vs Shirley May 8th - Match ReportTimaru started well, pouncing on a Shirley mistake and fullback Ricky Neame scored in the first minute. They then consolidated their position with Willie Wright kicking two penalties to lead 11-0 after 14 minutes. Shirley finally started to get some ball to use but their inability to take the last pass or to find touch or goal from penalties meant that they squandered opportunities. Blair Mitchell-Kuru then scored for Timaru from a long way out and with the Wright conversion, they held an 18-0 lead. Shirley dug deep however and after some determined driving play, Sam Treleaven stretched out to score beside the post. Waylen Skipps kicked the conversion and Shirley went to halftime feeling like they were back in the game, although 18-7 down. Shirley dominated territory at the start of the second half and scored an excellent end to end try by James Bishop which was converted by Skipps in just the 4th minute of the half. A penalty to Skipps after 15 minutes drew the teams closer at 18-17 and play then see-sawed throughout the half. A further penalty to Wright for an offside offence took Timaru out to 21-17 with six minutes to go. Shirley then threw everything into attack and thought that Sam Treleaven was going to win the match with a last minute try, only to be brought back for a “forward pass”. The team certainly felt similar emotions to those of the Crusaders a few hours earlier against the Bulls! An improvement on our performance against Marlborough with excellent efforts from Vaa Mailei, Sam Treleaven and James Bishop.
