Spirit of Rugby Awards 2010 AnnouncedEach year The Canterbury Rugby Football Union makes awards to students playing in the midweek competitions who have made an outstanding contribution to their team over and above their playing ability. The key qualities we are looking for are sportsmanship, leadership, honesty, discipline, teamwork, courage and humility. Past recipients have included elite players who have nurtured youngsters through their first season in the game; students who have been injured but have volunteered to help manage their team; players who have displayed true sportsmanship on and off the field and students who may not have been the best players in the team but who nevertheless give of their very best week in and week out just for the love of the game. We hear a great deal about the professional side of rugby but because these awards focus on the spirit in which the game is played as opposed to winning and losing, we at CRFU believe they are among the most important we make every year.
