Te Waipounamu Tournament

26 Feb 2010

Canterbury MaoriIt is a significant year for New Zealand Maori Rugby, as we celebrate 100 years since the first New Zealand Maori rugby team was selected in 1910.

To kick-off the season, the Waitaha (Canterbury Maori) Men’s, Women’s and Colts sides travel to Timaru this weekend for the Te Waipounamu Tournament at Alpine Energy Stadium. The Men’s team play two games, against Otago, and either Aoraki or Tasman, and the Women’s and Colts teams will compete against Otago, Southland, Tasman and Aoraki.

From the tournament, a South Island (Te Waipounamu) Maori team will be selected. The side will play two fixtures – The first against Te Tini a Maui (Central Maori) on the 6th March in Palmerston North, and the second in Christchurch against Te Hiku O Te Ika (Northern Maori), on the 20th March at Burnside Park.

The Te Waipounamu tournament is held at this time of the year so all Maori players not in a Super 14 Squad are available to play.
