Tui Woodend Sevens

sevensThe 15th Tui Woodend Sevens annual tournament was held at Gladstone Park, Woodend on Saturday, 31st January with 24 teams participating.

Six teams from North Canterbury, one from the West Coast and the rest from Christchurch battled through pool play, in the morning rounds, to see who would make it through to the Cup, Plate and Bowl finals.

With temperatures reaching into the early thirties, great crowd support and sponsors products, we watched some of the best rugby sevens played in Woodend for many years.

sevens 2Burnham took out the Bowl final by beating Kaiapoi 28-10, Kaiapoi being the only North Canterbury team to make the semi-finals, although Woodend Green did make it to the Championship round.

Samoan United Barbarians deserved the Plate title by beating Marist Albion White 41-12.

The Championship final was an excellent example of Sevens Rugby, these two sides were the best on display in this 24 team tournament which saw Greymouth Marist deservedly winning by five tries to four over Belfast. Final result 33-24.

Thank you to the players and crowd for your continued support of this event, which is now firmly on the Canterbury Rugby calendar. Seven Rugby is known for its flair and ability to throw new stars into the limelight and there were no exceptions here last weekend. We look forward to hosting this event again in January 2010.
