Success for Red and Black Rugby

Last Saturday marks one the most successful days in Canterbury rugby history – The Canterbury side successfully won their fourth consecutive ITM Cup title, beating Waikato in Hamilton 12-3, equaling Auckland’s record of four 4 consecutive NPC titles, which they have done twice, and both the South Island Invitational and Under 20 titles were won by our Canterbury Colts and Canterbury Metro U20 respectively.

Turning the tables of their loss at Rugby Park 13-27 three weeks prior, Canterbury played with maturity, making the most of their opportunities and allowing Tom Taylor to kick their 12 points of the match, which was enough to seal the victory.

At Rugby Park, the Canterbury Colts continued their winning ways of the season, conquering Otago B 35-24 in the final of the South Island Invitational Tournament. The defending champions were no match for the Colts, as they took full control from the starting whistle.

With convincing wins in the round robin over Canterbury Country, Tasman, and a come-back win against Metro the week prior, Canterbury Colts had well and truly earned their position in the final, playing a confident, exciting style of rugby, with impeccable ball skills.

The Canterbury Metro U20 side outclassed Otago U19 48-12 in the South Island Under 20 Final, played as the Curtain Raiser to the Invitational Final. The convincing win was a great improvement from their close 15-9 win over the Otago U19 side two weeks prior in their round-robin match, played in Dunedin.

Over the fence on Malvern Park, Canterbury Metro also flattened the Otago Colts side 42-30, capping off the trio of wins for the day.

Canterbury Country ventured South for their annual fixtures against their Country foes. Played in snow on Thursday night at Central Bush in Invercargill, Canterbury Country succumbed to Southland Country 15-9, but didn’t leave the South winless, bouncing back to beat Otago Country 35-24 on Sunday.

Sadly the Canterbury Women’s team couldn’t win their way into a spot in the NZRU Women’s Competition Final, losing to Wellington 48-13 the week previous, in Wellington. Auckland went on to beat Wellington 34-8.
