Women’s Provincial Championship Kicks off this Weekend
Canterbury Rugby CEO Hamish Riach says this promises to be an exciting season with a continuing increase in the number of female players and some strong performances from Canterbury in recent years to build on. “We came third in last year’s competition, and made the final in 2008 and 2009. I know that our squad are hoping to build on that success this year and I am looking forward to following their progress. “We have some great home games coming up, including 11-time champions Auckland coming to Rugby Park this weekend and traditional rivals Otago the weekend after. So I hope that we get some good crowds along to support the team and watch some top quality rugby,” Riach said. Canterbury’s Head Coach, John Sherratt, says he has a strong squad this year that should provide some entertaining rugby. “We are excited about the 2012 season and looking forward to our first game on Saturday. It will certainly be a tough one, with Auckland having won every championship since 1999, bar one. We have only beaten Auckland once, in 2009, but we are up for the challenge tomorrow and will be looking to rectify that record,” Sherratt said. The Women’s Provincial Championship consists of a Round Robin with all teams playing in a single pool. The two Provincial Unions with the highest number of competition points at the completion of the Round Robin will proceed to the Final, to be played on 27 October 2012.
